Top 5 Games of the 50’s

The 1950’s may seem like a lifetime ago, but some of the most popular toys and classic games were created in the fifties, games that still make classic gifts today. Here are some of the best retro toys from the fifties that have survived as classics today.

The Frisbee

It’s one of the simplest toys ever and almost everyone has one. It’s very cheap to buy and was first created in the 1950s.

Mr Potato Head

He has been remarketed by Disney after the Toy Story movies, but Mr Potato Head was first released in 1952 and was to be used with a real potato! He also became the first ever toy to be advertised on TV, making him an overnight sensation.

The Hula Hoop

The Hula Hoop has existed in some form or another for thousands of years, making it one of the best retro games ever, but it wasn’t until 1957 that the Hula Hoop we know today was manufactured and marketed.

Scrabble

It’s one of the most loved board games ever and it was invented by Alfred Butts, an architect. Scrabble is one of the original retro games.

Play-Doh

It may seem hard to believe but Play-Doh has been around since the fifties, and was originally invented with the purpose of cleaning wallpaper. It’s perhaps ironic then that most children end up smearing Play-Doh on the walls while they’re playing with it!
